Helping Service Users Towards Employment Policy

This Policy underpins the Trust’s Vision, Values, Aims and Behaviours and embeds key national drivers which highlight the importance of employment in maintaining health and wellbeing, and the place of occupation and employment as part of a therapeutic recovery process. The policy is relevant across all clinical service delivery areas within South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and specifically relevant to service users subject to Care Programme Approach (CPA).
Employment is an important issue for everyone. The economic downturn since 2008 and the subsequent slow recovery, has exacerbated the problem of unemployment. There is evidence people with mental health problems or learning disabilities are disadvantaged in the world of work.
There is evidence that employment is ‘therapy’ and not solely an outcome and cannot easily be replicated in other clinical or social interventions delivered, so access to real employment opportunities is essential to mental and physical wellbeing.
